The 2007 Best Practices process is now in full swing. It's time to submit your ideas. Its also time to thank those who work to create a better way. We are accepting nominations for the Stewardship Award.

Leadership Roadmap to Success
“The Leadership Roadmap is a book of clear, concise framework for leadership development. It is exactly what leaders need to build a winning organization,” said Dwane Baumgardner, Scanlon Steward, former CEO, Magna Donnelly and Co-Author, Leadership Roadmap.

Baumgardner and Russ Scaffede, VP of Manufacturing, Tiara Yachts, Shingo Prize Winner and former Plant Manager of the Toyota Engine Plant in Georgetown, KY are co- authors of The Leadership Roadmap. This book explains how to use the Scanlon Principles, lean and innovation to drive organizational success. The authors’ credibility comes from a combined total of 30 years of hands-on executive level experience and 60 years of combined years in business at companies like Toyota Motor Corporation, General Motors Corporation and Donnelly Corporation.

Readers are expected to relate to the context of The Leadership Roadmap to help make a difference in their personal or professional lives. The book bridges the gap between theory and practice while explaining the Scanlon Principles in depth.

“The content and presentation of the Leadership Roadmap is new and different. It enables the reader to customize the information for personal or organizational needs. The information creates an integrated approach to the leadership of people, lean and innovation systems,” said Baumgardner.

All levels of an organization from the CEO and managers to the average employee can benefit from its content. The Roadmap offers methods that are known to develop leaders, effect organizational success and create winning teams.

Baumgardner said this book is based on the belief that people no matter their job description have a desire to make a difference in both their work and life.

Baumgardner and Scaffede will sharing their roadmap as part of the combined leadership retreat and lean tour on October 26-27 in Holland, MI. A prepublication draft of The Leadership Roadmap will be provided to all participants.

Network Now Accepting Best Practice Submissions, Stewardship Nominations

The Scanlon Leadership Network is now accepting submissions for the Best Practices Program and Nominations for the Scanlon Stewardship Award.

“It takes everyone to make the Best Practices Program work. All companies have Best Practices and making them available to our fellow Scanlon members benefits the sharing company as well as the rest of the Network,” said Marge Holata, Director of Associate Involvement, SGS Tool Company.

The Best Practices Program is based on Joe Scanlon’s idea that "together we can achieve the impossible." Members of the Scanlon Leadership Network continually develop by sharing great ideas with each other. It also provides a way to recognize employees for generating innovative ideas.

Submitting a Best Practice is quick and easy. The Network office provides help and has developed a simple one-page form to make sure all necessary information is gathered. Best Practices can even be submitted on-line at http://www.scanlonleader.org.

All submitted practices are published and the “best of the best” receive gold, silver or bronze recognition. All awards are presented at the Annual Conference.

“It is very rewarding when companies are able to see their ideas published and know their efforts are being shared with everyone in the Scanlon Network,” said Holata.

Every year the Scanlon Leadership Network also selects a deserving individual to receive the Network’s most prestigious honor, The Scanlon Stewardship Award. Those who are considered for the award will have:

contributed over time to the Scanlon Principles
contributed over time to the Scanlon Network
demonstrated the Scanlon Principles in their profession and community

“It is such a pleasure to continue to have individuals dedicated to The Scanlon Leadership Network and present this award every year,” said Holata.

Last year’s recipient of the Scanlon Stewardship award was Myron Marsh, President/CEO, Thomson Shore.

All Stewardship nominations are confidential and can be submitted until the end of 2006. Best Practice Submissions are due by January 31, 2007. Contact the Scanlon office at office@scanlonleader.org or call 517-332-8927 for more information.

John Donnelly’s Writings Donated to Scanlon Foundation

Magna Donnelly recently donated a collection of writigs by the late John Donnelly Sr., former CEO, Donnelly Corporation. The donation was made at the request of Maryam Komejan, CEO The Zeika Group.

The writings include reflections on having a successful business while balancing humanity, marketing and technology. John once wrote "I believe that we are developing something that has significance beyond our own interests...it is not the whim of one man or a few men. It is not something that is nice to do when you have profit all made and your problems all solved, but rather it is the way to excellence."

“I am thankful that Magna Donnelly donated the writings. I would hate to see Mr. Donnelly’s work be forgotten. I know others can benefit from his thoughts in both the workplace and their personal lives. I hope that Scanlon members will benefit from Mr. Donnelly’s ideas and take them to the next level,” said Komejan.

Komejan was fortunate enough to be an employee of John Donnelly Sr. She worked closely with him on his writings, thoughts and reflections. Since Donnelly was her mentor she said she has lived to see many of his theories work in actual practice and knows the writings will help organizations in the future.

“I think it is hard to know where you’re going if you don’t know the context and evolution of where you have been. Organizations are always looking forward and tend to forget about the foundation that has already been laid down for them. John Donnelly’s work will enable organizations to think deeply as they move forward with greater knowledge,” said Komejan.

John Donnelly Sr. was the CEO of Magna Donnelly for more than 50 years. Under his leadership the company advanced from being a small manufacturer to one of the most dominant mirror suppliers of the world. He led the company in marketing and technological advancements and became internationally recognized for introducing Scanlon concepts like employee involvement in the workplace.

“Since Mr. Donnelly passed away in 1986, his writing are what speaks for him,” said Komejan.

The Scanlon Foundation will catalogue the collection and then determine the best way to make the writings available to future generations. For more information on John Donnelly’s writings contact the Scanlon Foundation or Maryam Komejan at 616-392-7580.

The Scanlon Network Board Welcomes Brad Hill

“Being involved with the Network has enabled me to interact with a group of bright, creative people who share the same values and passion for employee involvement,” said Hill. “Now that I am a member of the Board I hope that I will continue to learn from my Scanlon peers. I also look forward to enlightening others about the rewards associated with providing dignity and purpose in the work life of employees.

“I hope to create awareness that being competitive in the world marketplace has less to do with cutting costs than realizing the value that employees can contribute. Being part of the Scanlon Network Board now gives me the responsibility to ensure that mainstream America sees the Scanlon Principles, as a philosophy that can help them be far more competitive.”

Get To Know A Member-S&L Plastics
S&L Plastics located in Nazareth, PA and is “Where Plastics Take Shape”. They developed their PARTNERS Scanlon Plan shortly after becoming a member of the Network in 2001.

S&L Plastics purchases thermoplastic resins for injection molding, profile and sheet extrusion processes to produce custom and stock components for a variety of markets including industrial, electronic, construction, automotive and packaging. Some of their products are sold under the names of Measurex®, Nylaflow ®, Nylatron ®, and Orthoform ®.

In addition, S&L is a full service processor offering part and tool design, tool construction and acquisition, material development, component testing, assembly, customized packaging, stocking and just-in-time delivery for local accounts.

“S&L is unique because of the diversity of materials and processes used and the markets we serve,” said John Bungert, President, S&L Plastics. “We are truly a one stop shop with a host of customers buying from more than one of our core processes.”

Bungert feels that the diversity S&L provides can often create difficulty for everyone to focus on their responsibilities. He credits the PARTNERS Scanlon Plan for keeping the open communication needed for everyone to stay informed and on the right track.

“Scanlon has given us a process to better communicate with all employees and provides a way for those that wish to participate and contribute beyond just doing their job.

“The Scanlon Process is not a quick fix nor is it ever complete but belonging to the Network provides the support organizations need. The training materials, sharing of Best Practices and the conferences are all great tools for shortening the learning curve and keeping people engaged,” said Bungert.
